Chapter 13

Homecoming

Wet feet trampled the frozen grass beneath the melting patches of snow. Not even the cold wind blowing in Lev’s face could quiet his thoughts.

Why did I lose my cool back there?

Lev shook his head and took a deep breath. He surveyed his surroundings one last time.

No sign of those giants.

On that line of thought, Lev halted and turned towards his visibly exhausted men. “Let’s rest here.”

His men collectively breathed sighs of relief as they moved to relay the order and set up the encampment.

Lev inspected the wagons. Their provisions were low, but their wood stock looked to be just enough to get the entire party home.

Lev fetched some wood and began piling it up near their encampment. “Get a fire started. Make sure the captives get enough food and warmth as well.”

The men grumbled.

“Is there a problem?” Lev asked with a scowl on his face.

Eventually, one of them answered. “Sorry, sir, but is it right for us to bring them home?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, didn't they attack you? Not to mention those horrifying gifts they left us.” Disgust was clear on the soldier’s face.

“Oh...” Lev muttered.

The soldier nodded. “Those creatures decorate with their enemies’ remains. I don’t know what made me shudder more, the preserved head totems or the skull throne. What says those things won’t disembowel us in our sleep?”

“Our captives are not the same as those monstrous creatures.”

“But the masks—”

Lev briefly went inside his tent and pulled out a mask he had swiped from the city ruins before promptly returning. The mask from the ruins was scratched, full of holes, and drab in colour.

“This is a mask, yes. But is it the same as theirs?”

“Well, no,” one of the soldiers admitted. “This looks cruder—”

“Exactly. Our captives’ masks have a different design. Our captives talk to us with voices instead of spears. And in case you forgot,” Lev emphasised, “I just negotiated with our captives’ representative.

“There’s plenty of evidence that our captives belonged to a much more sophisticated society than the masked creatures back at the ruins did.”

“Still… sir. Are you sure we need to bring them back? Our city is still being rebuilt and our campsite is safe without them.”

“Not safe enough. We have no intel on the whereabouts of those antlered beasts or any other hostiles beyond the light of our campfires. Last resort, our captives can be used as cannon fodder.”

The other soldiers went silent.

“And trust me. They don’t want to be our cannon fodder, but having made their choice, they don’t want to be abandoned, either.”

Lev’s men continued their impromptu vow of silence.

“Now do your damn jobs!” Lev barked.

Just like that, the wood and food was quickly divided, perhaps with some reluctance, equally among the goblinoids and the captives.
